Collinwood Road Church is a congregation of the United Reformed Church, serving the estates of Risinghurst, Sandhills and Barton on the eastern edge of the Oxford suburb of Headington, England. We are a small church, with about 50 members, but have a full programme of activities, covering worship, bible study, community action and fellowship.
We are committed to proclaiming the Gospel: and making the Gospel relevant to today's world.
We are a church with a strong sense of place, committed to representing Christ in a particular place. Despite our limited numbers, we run a range of community activities, including a lunch club for the elderly and a drop-in centre.
We currently have very few children, and therefore do not have a regular junior church. However, we are keen to restart a junior church. If you are visiting us with children, please let us know in advance and we should be able to arrange for one of our junior church leaders to provide activities for the children. Typically, children stay in the service for the first fifteen minutes before going out to their own activities in the hall.
On the first Sunday of the month we worship at 10.00 a.m. instead of our usual 9.30 a.m. and have all-age worship in the hall. This service has lots of activities, visual aids, strong but simple songs, and usually a very short sermon. It is particularly suitable for children, but also for those of all ages who want a lively, informal style of worship.
Music is a key part of our praise of God.On most Sunday mornings our small, but enthusiastic choir sings an introit, and we are keen to expand the range of choral music we are able to tackle. We also have a music group, made up largely of younger members of the Church, using guitars, violin and other instruments; which is enabling us to develop a more folk/gospel influenced repertoire.
Our denomination, the United Reformed Church, was formed by the merger of Congregationalists, Presbyterians and Churches of Christ, and is the main representative of the Reformed tradition in England. Founded through reuniting traditions that had been separated for hundreds of years, it is committed to working for cooperation and unity amongst Christians. Locally we have a number of ecumenical involvements, and have the very great blessing of being able to share our church building with three other congregations who worship in languages other than English.
